The Pontchartrain Basin has its origins deep in the heart of Mississippi above Jackson where travelers on I-55 cross the Pearl River twice.

From southern Mississippi, across the Louisiana Florida Parishes to Chandeleur Sound, the Pontchartrain Basin is comprised of many sub-basins, some named after their principal streams.

Most maps of the Pontchartrain Basin are political in nature, in that they fail to account for the considerable area of the basin north of the Mississippi state line.
