In the 1980s, the Lake Maurepas Society met (& drank) at the Gator’s Den in Galva across the road from a spot of land on the lakeshore. Beautiful sunsets peeked from under the Interstate bridge and Big Chief Dave Hargrave came up with the idea of building a park. With available resources and necessary permissions it was made to be so. The picnic area is well-used, has endured and stood the test of time (and hurricanes) and is still delivering stunning sunsets. It is currently well taken care of by the Lions Club of Laplace, who were kind enough to adopt and maintain it along with the help of St. John the Baptist Parish.
